European Union design reform begins
In particular, from May 1, 2025, the legal definition of “products” eligible for design protection will no longer only include products that are physical objects, but also products that are in a non-physical form, such as graphic works or symbols, logos and graphical user interfaces. The new Union Design Regulation (UDV) and its implementing regulations also explicitly recognize that animations, such as movements or transitions, of the features of a product can contribute to the appearance of designs
and will therefore be explicitly eligible for design protection.
